Backlinks have been at the core of Search Engine Optimisation for many years now and they are set to stay there for years to come.
However, many bloggers still put little importance and effort into obtaining backlinks for their blog.
The silly part is that it is extremely easy to develop 10-20 new links back to your blog every day. I want to share with you four simple ways of generating backlinks to your blog.
- Social Media - Sites such as Twitter and Facebook are fast becoming the number 1 resource for bloggers as a way to grow their blogs. Not only is it a great way to network with your followers and reach out to fellow bloggers, it is also a great way of pointing links back to your site. Recent updates to the Google algorithm have seen more importance placed on links from Social Media and its importance is only likely to grow as its popularity increases.
- RSS Directories – Your RSS feed can be submitted to RSS directories as a great way of getting backlinks on autopilot. Every time you publish a new post, you get instant backlinks from these directories. Not only that, but other people can put your feed on their sites for more exposure and backlinks. Here is a good list of RSS Directories to get you started.
- Commenting – I have spoken countless times in the past about the importance of blog commenting as a way of growing your blog. One of the reasons I believe it to be a key element of a blog marketing plan is that it is a great way of driving traffic and generating backlinks. When you leave a comment on another blog it will link back to your blog. Plugins such as CommentLuv also make it possible for you to get deeper links into your blog content and not just to your homepage.
- Guest Blogging – This is another method that I have talked about in-depth in earlier posts, but I have not really touched on the backlink aspect. When you write a post on another blog, there is usually the opportunity to link out from the post. Most bloggers will allow around 3-5 links in a single post, some are more picky. You can use these as a way of linking back to content on your blog that is relevant to the guest post that you are writing. You can also link back to your blogs homepage in your author bio.
As you can see these are four methods of generating backlinks that are not time-consuming and will allow you to grow your blog over time.

Hey David,
I would say article marketing, but with all the drama surrounding that at the moment, who’s to say that’s still an effective method. Remains to be seen…

Yeah, Article Marketing used to be a great way of backlink building.
I think that the time has come to move into new areas though.
From those 4 types i like most commeting and guest blogging. I learned that the more you interact with other bloggers the more you stand to gain.

Hi David
I have used all the methods you suggested. Definitely helps with the backlinks and also getting my blog out there for others to know about. Just started doing some article marketing. Will have to see how effective that is too.

Hey David,
I am using all of these. The last one I started using are RSS directories. I only submitted to a handful of those and not sure if they are still working for me, but it only took me a few minutes to do, so if there are any results it will be great, if not, at least I didn’t spend days doing it.
I love guest blogging and get more and more invitations every day, but I can’t make it and feel bad about refusing people
Anyway, great post

I love guest blogging also.. Since I launched Puxee I have had less time to devote to it but I am looking to get some guest work done in the next couple of weeks.
You are more than welcome to guest post on this blog if you wish.

Hi David,
All good points, but I found the one comment about Google maybe putting more emphasis on social networking links particularly interesting. It’s obvious SN is getting more popular – it’s hard to miss all the off-line marketing for SN taking place even on the TV these days. So the algorithim comment is an interesting one.
Thanks for the RSS directory – always looking to update my list.

I have noticed that some of my well shared articles are currently ranking at the top of the SE’s but they have only a couple of real backlinks.

Well-written posts where excerpts from those blog posts are featured in other blogs and news articles and are linked back to the blog’s home page or specific blog post are a surefire way to get backlinks.
I recently got backlinks from the a high PR-ranked news site pointing to my blog. Not to be boastful though, but it helps in adding more inbound links to my blog.
I still have a long way to go for me to have a PR1 or higher for my two blogs.
Great post, David.
Cheers!

Well another method is placing articles on blog networks. Am in a middle of a case study to see if this works post the Panda update (prior to Panda it worked great)

Blogging is fairly new to me, but affiliate marketing is not. I have teamed up with Kevin Muldoon (used to own and run bloggingtips.com) as a way of learning from someone who really knows there stuff.
Thanks for your information. I had not even really considered RSS directories, but will definitely make it part of my link building plan going forward.
Thanks

Hi David,
Blog commenting and Social media is a good way to get immediate traffic but backlink are of no use since they are all nofollow and I believe the same with RSS too.
Yes Guest posting is a great way to present ourselves to the world by writing good post on an high traffic blog under the same niche.
Thanks
